Garib Nagar families await home repairs 40 days after Bandra East demolition

Garib Nagar families await home repairs 40 days after Bandra East demolition

Dozens of families in Garib Nagar, Bandra East, are facing severe hardships as they await home repairs and rehabilitation more than 40 days after a demolition drive damaged their properties. The displaced residents have been left without proper shelter during the harsh monsoon season, with many forced to live near an open drainage system.

As of July 4, 2026, the affected families continue to wait for assistance. The demolition drive damaged 100 legitimate homes in the Garib Nagar area, leaving a significant number of people exposed to the elements. Residents have reported that despite the passage of over a month, no significant steps have been taken by local authorities to repair the structures or provide alternative housing.

The delay in rehabilitation persists despite repeated directions from the Bombay High Court. According to the residents, the court had instructed authorities to address the situation, but these orders have not resulted in immediate relief. Many families allege that the local administration has shown a lack of urgency in executing the court's directives, leaving them in vulnerable conditions during the heavy monsoon rains.

A physical assessment of the site highlighted the difficult living conditions of the Garib Nagar residents. Living in close proximity to an open drain has raised concerns about health and sanitation, especially with the ongoing wet weather. The damaged huts offer little to no protection from the rain, compounding the daily struggles of the displaced population.

The residents are demanding immediate action from the authorities to either repair their damaged homes or arrange for suitable alternative accommodation. With the monsoon season fully underway, the families remain in a state of uncertainty, waiting for the local administration to comply with the Bombay High Court's directives and provide the necessary relief.
