Gautam Adani Urges New Credit Rating Model for Infrastructure at Mumbai Conclave

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani on Monday called for a new credit framework to evaluate large infrastructure projects in India, speaking at the 'Infrastructure Landscape: Vision for Viksit Bharat' Conclave hosted by CareEdge Group in Mumbai.

Adani stated that traditional rating models, which rely on standalone cash flows, may not fully capture the value and broader economic ecosystems generated by modern infrastructure. He noted that while analytical frameworks were originally designed for incremental projects with easily defined boundaries, India's growing infrastructure ambitions require rating systems to evolve.

He stressed that the proposal is not a request for reduced scrutiny or lower standards, but for analytical models with wider lenses that recognize the multiplier effects of integrated projects.

Adani classified infrastructure into three segments: replacement infrastructure, growth infrastructure, and platform infrastructure. He cited the Mundra port in Gujarat, the Vizhinjam port in Kerala, and the Khavda renewable energy project as examples of platform infrastructure that generate new demand, capabilities, and interconnected industrial networks.

He pointed out that the Vizhinjam port became the fastest Indian port to reach two million TEUs within 18 months, despite initial difficulties in attracting capital due to project risks and complexity.

Adani also linked infrastructure development to the growth of artificial intelligence, noting that AI systems fundamentally rely on physical assets such as data centres, electricity, cooling systems, transmission networks, and land. He urged CareEdge to pioneer a comprehensive credit framework for integrated platform infrastructure from India.
