Girgaon Ganesh Idol Collapse Kills Two as 47-Foot Statues Persist in Mumbai

Safety concerns have resurfaced across Mumbai after the 22-foot Bhuleshwarcha Raja idol collapsed in Girgaon on Saturday night, leaving two people dead and five others injured, including two children.

The fatal incident has renewed scrutiny over the size of idols across the city during the public Ganesh festival. Despite repeated efforts by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and civic authorities to regulate and impose height caps on idols, massive structures measuring up to 47 feet continue to be a major feature of the celebrations.

Across Mumbai, over 3,200 pandals continue to install large-format idols, maintaining the tradition of towering statues despite ongoing regulatory challenges and safety risks highlighted by the recent tragedy in Girgaon.

Civic authorities have repeatedly attempted to enforce restrictions on idol heights, but massive statues remain widely drawn and installed by Sarvajanik Ganesh festival organisers throughout the city.
