Gorai Residents Raise Safety Concerns Over Mumbai Jetty Expansion Work

Gorai residents raised serious safety concerns on July 1, 2026, regarding the ongoing expansion work at the Gorai Jetty in Mumbai during the monsoon season. Although local citizens welcome the long-term benefits of the project, they have warned that current safety measures and crowd management protocols at the site are highly inadequate.

The infrastructure project is designed to expand the jetty's capacity to accommodate a larger volume of passengers and support future Ro-Ro ferry services. However, the arrival of the Mumbai monsoon has heightened local anxieties regarding the safety of daily commuters who must navigate the active construction zone.

Among the primary hazards highlighted by residents is the presence of stagnant water at the Gorai Jetty. With the monsoon now fully underway, the wet conditions and pooling water have compounded the challenges faced by passengers attempting to board vessels amidst the ongoing expansion work.

Crowd management has also emerged as a significant issue for the local community. To address overcrowding and ensure passenger safety, the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) had previously deployed personnel to the site late last year. However, these security personnel were temporarily absent for a few weeks earlier this year, around March.

Although the MMB personnel have since returned to the Gorai Jetty, residents noted that they are currently stationed exclusively at the boarding point. Local commuters argue that having staff positioned only at the boarding point is insufficient to ensure overall safety, leaving other high-traffic areas of the expanding jetty unmonitored during the hazardous monsoon period.

As the expansion work continues, residents are urging authorities to implement more robust safety measures across the entire jetty area to prevent any potential accidents during the heavy rains.
