GRP hunt for man caught on CCTV threatening passenger on Govandi local train

The Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Government Railway Police (GRP) have launched a manhunt for an unidentified man who was captured on a CCTV camera threatening a co-passenger inside a Central Railway local train at Govandi, Mumbai. The incident, which occurred following an altercation between the two passengers, has raised safety concerns on the suburban railway network.

The suspect, described by authorities as a shabbily dressed man, was filmed during the argument inside the local train. The Lokmanya Tilak Terminus GRP began tracking the individual after reviewing the onboard security footage. Investigators are currently probing whether the accused was inebriated during the confrontation.

Despite the active search, the GRP has not yet registered a First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the threat. Officials explained that they cannot officially lodge an FIR because the complainant has not yet come forward to report the incident to the police.

The GRP faces additional challenges in identifying the suspect due to technological limitations on the Central Railway network. A senior police official explained that the cameras installed on Central Railway local trains have not been fitted with a Facial Recognition System, unlike those at Western Railway stations. As a result of this technical limitation, railway police officers must manually track down the unidentified man.

The threat at Govandi occurred approximately one week after a passenger was stabbed to death on a suburban train between Goregaon and Malad stations. In that separate incident on the night of June 23, 21-year-old Virar resident Mayank Lohar was killed while returning home from work. Lohar was stabbed to death by a co-passenger, identified as 30-year-old Roshan Suvarna, following an argument over keeping a door closed in a first-class coach of a Churchgate-Nalasopara train. Suvarna was subsequently arrested by the police.
