Heavy Rain and 4.16-Metre High Tide Cause Waterlogging in Santacruz and Mumbai Suburbs

An intense downpour combined with a 4.16-metre high tide to cause waterlogging and localised flooding across Santacruz, the eastern suburbs, the western suburbs, and the island city of Mumbai on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that the heavy rainfall coincided with the peak tide in the afternoon, resulting in disruptions in several low-lying areas of the city.

The high tide of 4.16 metres occurred at exactly 1:10 PM on Wednesday. Because the heavy rain fell during the same period as the high tide, the city's drainage systems faced severe pressure, leading to water accumulation on roads and localised flooding in vulnerable spots.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the heavy rain and subsequent flooding also resulted in incidents of fallen trees and general disruption to movement in the affected low-lying areas of the suburbs.

The municipal corporation's rain gauges recorded varying levels of precipitation across the different zones of the city by the evening. Santacruz recorded the highest localized impact of the day, registering 108 mm of rainfall.

The eastern suburbs of Mumbai recorded an average rainfall of 99 mm by 6:00 PM on Wednesday, according to the civic body's reports.

During the same period, the western suburbs received an average rainfall of 90 mm, as recorded by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

In contrast to the suburban areas, the island city of Mumbai recorded comparatively lower rainfall. The average precipitation in the island city was measured at 49 mm by 6:00 PM on Wednesday.

The combination of the heavy afternoon downpour and the 1:10 PM high tide created a challenging situation for civic management, as waterlogged streets, localised flooding, and fallen trees were reported across both the suburbs and the island city throughout Wednesday.
