Heavy Rain Forces 19 Flight Diversions At Mumbai Airport Over Weekend

Operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai were severely impacted over the weekend of July 4-5, 2026, due to intense weather conditions. Heavy rain and poor visibility disrupted flight schedules, forcing a total of 19 flights to divert to alternate airports and causing significant delays for passengers.
According to flight-tracking data compiled by Flightradar24, the flight disruptions began on Saturday, July 4, and continued through Sunday, July 5. Over the course of the weekend, flights arriving at the Mumbai airport faced an average delay of 43 minutes.
The adverse weather forced air traffic controllers to divert six arriving flights on Saturday. The situation escalated on Sunday, with another 13 flights diverted to various other airports as the heavy rainfall persisted.
Among the affected flights was flight 6E6544, a Mumbai-bound flight departing from Varanasi. On Saturday, the aircraft attempted to land at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport twice. However, due to the low visibility caused by the heavy downpour, the flight was unable to land safely and was subsequently diverted to Surat.
The impact of the heavy rain was also heavily felt on the ground across Mumbai. The intense downpour resulted in localized street flooding in multiple areas, causing severe disruptions to local traffic. Additionally, several trees collapsed due to the weather, and numerous vehicles and people were left stranded on the flooded streets.
With a red alert in place for Mumbai until Monday, authorities warned that more flight diversions and operational disruptions could occur at the airport if the inclement weather continues.
