Heavy Rains Shut Andheri Subway and Disrupt Mumbai Train Services

Heavy monsoon rains lashed Mumbai and its suburbs from the night of June 30, 2026, through the morning of July 1, 2026, causing severe waterlogging and forcing the closure of the crucial Andheri subway. The deluge disrupted public transport, delayed train services across major lines, and prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the city and the Konkan region.
In Andheri, the subway recorded water accumulation of up to five feet, making vehicular movement impossible. Local authorities closed the route and deployed pumps to drain the accumulated water from the subway. Traffic police officers were stationed at major intersections in the area to manage the diverted vehicular movement.
The transport disruptions left many office-goers facing significant delays in reaching their destinations. Commuters on the Western, Central, and Harbour railway lines experienced major delays as water accumulated on the tracks. Central Railway and Western Railway officials issued statements confirming the rescheduling of some services, leaving passengers waiting at stations for extended periods.
In addition to waterlogging, strong winds and heavy rainfall caused trees to fall across several northern suburbs. The Fire Department received multiple calls reporting fallen trees on roads in Kandivali, Borivali, Malad, Dahisar, and Goregaon, which triggered extensive traffic jams.
The civic administration has advised residents living in low-lying areas to remain cautious as the IMD forecasted continued rainfall for the coming days. The weather department also issued an orange alert for other parts of the state, covering 29 districts.
The monsoon disruption coincided with the ongoing Monsoon session of the State Legislative Assembly in Mumbai. The state government is expected to face questioning from opposition parties regarding the rain situation, local infrastructure readiness, and ongoing rescue operations in flood-affected areas.
