Hedri Hospital Records 500th Childbirth, Expanding Tribal Maternal Care
Lloyds Kali Ammal Memorial Hospital (LKAMH) in Hedri, located in Gadchiroli district, has recorded the birth of its 500th baby, marking a key milestone in delivering maternal and neonatal healthcare to underserved tribal communities.
For women living in remote and tribal areas across Gadchiroli, reaching hospitals for childbirth frequently involves long journeys, limited transport options, and financial difficulties. The hospital was established in 2023 to address these challenges by providing medical services to residents of Gadchiroli and neighbouring regions completely free of cost.
Since its establishment, the facility in Hedri has managed numerous high-risk pregnancies referred from remote locations and primary health centres. These medical cases have included pre-eclampsia, diabetes, low platelet counts, foetal distress, and prematurity. Staff at the hospital have conducted emergency Caesarean sections, while newborns requiring critical medical intervention have received care in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
The medical team has also treated complicated twin and multiple pregnancies, including premature deliveries that required specialised neonatal support. In one challenging case, the hospital managed a premature triplet pregnancy that required a Caesarean delivery followed by dedicated neonatal care for the three newborns.
For mothers in distant villages, long-distance travel and delays in referrals can increase medical risks during pregnancy complications. The presence of a local facility has facilitated timely interventions and coordinated care closer to home.
Speaking on the milestone, B Prabhakaran, Managing Director of Lloyds Metals & Energy Limited, said the 500th birth represented more than a statistic, noting that 500 families did not have to leave their home region to receive necessary healthcare.
Kirthy Reddy, Director of Lloyds Infinite Foundation, said that every delivery carries responsibility toward the mother, baby, and family, adding that the hospital staff works to ensure that a family's geographical location does not dictate the quality of medical care they receive.
LKAMH announced that it plans to expand its maternal and neonatal services in the coming years to continue strengthening healthcare access in the region.
