How a $5 Million Advance Helped Shah Rukh Khan Buy KKR After Initial Hesitation

Bandra resident Shah Rukh Khan was initially hesitant to buy the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise during the initial team acquisition phase of the Indian Premier League because he believed Rs 20 crore was too large an investment, according to revelations by Lalit Modi.
The purchase was ultimately made possible after an unnamed mobile sponsor company stepped in to provide a crucial $5 million advance sponsorship. This financial backing enabled the actor to overcome his initial hesitation and finalize the acquisition.
According to Modi, the financial scale of the Indian Premier League's team bidding phase presented a significant hurdle. Khan found the required Rs 20 crore investment to be too high of a financial risk at the time, leading to doubts about whether he should proceed with purchasing a franchise.
The deadlock was broken when the mobile sponsor company offered the $5 million advance. This substantial advance sponsorship provided the necessary funding to facilitate the transaction, allowing Khan to secure the Kolkata Knight Riders.
The investment paved the way for the team to join the league. Since that initial acquisition phase, the Kolkata Knight Riders has established itself as one of the most prominent and valuable franchises in the Indian Premier League.
Modi's disclosure highlights the critical role that early corporate sponsorships played in securing team owners during the formative stages of the league, when even major public figures faced hesitation over the multi-crore investments required to participate.
Without the $5 million advance sponsorship from the mobile company, the acquisition of the Kolkata Knight Riders may not have gone through, as the Rs 20 crore price tag was deemed too large a sum for Khan to commit to at that early stage of the league's development.
