Hundreds Protest in Powai Against Proposed $1-Billion Brookfield GCC Project

Around 600 to 700 Mumbaikars took to the streets of Powai on Sunday morning to protest against a series of proposed development projects in the area, raising serious concerns regarding traffic congestion, inadequate civic infrastructure, and potential environmental impacts.

Local residents gathered to voice opposition against multiple upcoming projects across the Powai and Chandivli neighbourhoods, stating that the existing civic and road networks are already under severe strain.

Among the primary developments facing public pushback is a proposed Global Capability Centre (GCC) planned by Brookfield Asset Management. The firm plans to invest $1 billion to build what is described as Asia's largest Global Capability Centre in Powai.

Although the project is expected to generate thousands of employment opportunities, residents argued that the resulting influx of daily vehicular trips would severely impact the area. Demonstrators expressed alarm that the additional traffic volume could push the Powai-Chandivli corridor into chronic gridlock.

The protesters emphasised that civic infrastructure in both Powai and Chandivli is struggling to keep pace with rapid expansion, demanding that environmental concerns and traffic pressures be addressed before further large-scale commercial developments proceed.
