IAF Opens Registrations for Sekhon Marathon 2026 Starting From Cross Maidan

The Indian Air Force has opened registrations for the Sekhon Indian Air Force Marathon 2026, with the Mumbai edition of the mass-participation event scheduled to flag off from Cross Maidan in South Mumbai on October 4. The race will be hosted simultaneously across seven major cities nationwide, with the Headquarters Maintenance Command leading the Mumbai chapter.
The marathon pays tribute to Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, who single-handedly defended the Srinagar Airfield during the 1971 war and remains the sole recipient of India's highest military decoration from the Air Force. Organised as a major public outreach initiative, the event seeks to channel national resolve into physical endurance and discipline among citizens.
Defence officials noted that the event holds enhanced resonance following recent military engagements, particularly Operation Sindoor, which highlighted the operational readiness and resolve of the armed forces in safeguarding national sovereignty. Through the marathon, the IAF aims to translate defensive fortitude into a wider movement promoting mental strength, discipline, and physical fitness among youth, aligning directly with the central government's Fit India Movement.
A Defence spokesperson stated that the event is envisaged as a vital bridging effort between the military and the civilian populace, motivating young citizens to adopt healthy lifestyle choices while inspiring them to consider a career in the armed forces.
The Mumbai leg will feature timed categories designed for competitive athletes as well as amateur runners. Categories include a 21.1-kilometre half marathon, a 10K Run, and a 5K Run. The registration fee for the half marathon is set at Rs 2,000 for general participants and Rs 1,500 for defence personnel.
Organisers anticipate thousands of civilian runners, veterans, armed forces personnel, and fitness enthusiasts will take part across the city's streets. Interested participants can complete their registrations online through the official event portal or via standard event ticketing platforms.
