IIT Bombay Alumni Launch WeatherEx AI Platform for Localized Mumbai Forecasts

On July 20, 2026, a team of IIT Bombay alumni launched 'WeatherEx', a new AI-powered weather intelligence platform designed to provide customized and localized weather forecasts across Mumbai. The development team, spearheaded by researchers from the premier institute based in Powai, designed the platform to help local residents and civic authorities better understand monsoon patterns and changing weather conditions.
The newly introduced platform offers localized forecasting modules that allow Mumbaikars to access and interpret weather and monsoon winds on their own accord. By offering these specialized modules, WeatherEx helps users interpret complex weather patterns at different scales. This launch marks the first time a customized weather forecasting model has been built specifically for the city of Mumbai.
The developers of WeatherEx stated that the platform has already proven its forecasting accuracy under real-world conditions. According to the research team, the heavy rain spells that occurred in Mumbai during early July were predicted accurately by the platform's AI models prior to their arrival.
A major goal of the platform is to assist the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) with early flash flood predictions to improve disaster preparedness. The team hopes that the localized data will allow the municipal body to prepare for severe weather and implement safety measures well in advance of heavy downpours.
Dr. Akshay Sunil, a climate-tech expert and research alumnus from Powai’s IIT who is heading the WeatherEx initiative, highlighted the limitations of current weather forecasting methods. He noted that traditional weather and rain forecasting bodies often raise an alarm only a few hours before heavy showers actually hit the city.
With the official launch of WeatherEx, the development team hopes to collaborate closely with the BMC to facilitate prior preparedness. This proactive approach aims to give city administrators and citizens more time to prepare for severe weather events and manage the challenges of the monsoon season.
