IIT Bombay to open first international sub-campus at SUNY Old Westbury in New York

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B), located in Powai, has formalized a partnership with the State University of New York (SUNY) at Old Westbury to establish its first international sub-campus on Long Island, New York, USA. The agreement, which was formalized during a meeting between officials from both institutions on a Friday, marks the first international expansion for the premier Indian engineering institute.

The new sub-campus is scheduled to open next year, with the first academic offerings expected to be introduced by 2027. This collaboration aims to jointly develop engineering education, research, and innovation programs, bringing IIT-B's academic expertise directly into the American higher education landscape.

While the partnership has been officially established, several operational details for the new sub-campus are still being worked out by the two institutions. The initial academic rollout in 2027 will feature certificate programs in artificial intelligence, sustainability, and clean technology. Following these initial certificate offerings, joint degree programs are expected to be introduced in phases.

Currently, SUNY Old Westbury does not offer any engineering courses. IIT-B will play a critical role in bridging this academic gap. Faculty members from the Powai campus will travel to New York to teach classes and assist in developing the curriculum for the new programs.

Timothy Sams, the president of SUNY Old Westbury, welcomed the partnership and praised the Mumbai-based institution. He stated that IIT-B is recognized as a world-class institution and expressed excitement about establishing a direct partnership that advances teaching, innovation, and excellence in disciplines like physics and engineering. Sams added that the ultimate goal is to create a robust IIT-B presence on the SUNY Old Westbury campus.

The move represents a major milestone for IIT-B as it expands its global footprint and establishes a permanent teaching and research presence in the United States.
