IMD forecasts light rain for Thane on July 10 as Janta Nagar AQI hits 142

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Green Alert forecast for Friday, July 10, predicting light to moderate rainfall in Thane and neighbouring districts. This shift to lighter rain follows days of heavy downpours that disrupted daily life. Alongside the changing weather, the region's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) deteriorated to a moderate level of 64, with Janta Nagar emerging as a pollution hotspot by recording a poor AQI of 142.
According to the IMD's district-wise weather forecast for July 10, the transition to light to moderate rainfall will affect Thane, Mumbai, and Palghar districts. The weather agency stated that these conditions are very likely to prevail. Meanwhile, Ratnagiri and Raigad are expected to witness moderate rain at isolated places, and Sindhudurg is projected to receive moderate rainfall.
The forecast comes after the region experienced a dry Thursday. This dry spell followed several days of intense rainfall that disrupted the daily lives of residents and resulted in several reported rain-related incidents.
While the weather eased, air pollution remained a concern. The overall AQI deteriorated to 64, placing the region in the moderate category. Air quality readings from Thursday showed sharp disparities across different local stations.
Janta Nagar recorded the highest pollution levels with an AQI of 142, which falls into the poor category. Other areas reported moderate AQI levels, including Ambavali and Andheri East, which both recorded an AQI of 60. Bandra Kurla Complex and Borivali each recorded an AQI of 56. Gamdevi station recorded the best air quality in the region with an AQI of 33, placing it in the good category.
Under the standard AQI scale, levels between 0 and 50 are considered good, while levels from 51 to 100 are moderate. AQI readings between 101 and 150 are categorised as poor, 151 to 200 are unhealthy, and any reading above 200 is classified as hazardous.
