IMD Forecasts Light Rain in Mumbai as Seven Reservoirs Remain at 95% Capacity
The dry spell experienced across Mumbai and its wider metropolitan region through August is set to continue into this month, with the India Meteorological Department issuing no rainfall warnings for the city and its neighbouring districts for the current week.
Instead, the weather agency indicated that the region can expect only occasional spells of light rain over the coming days.
In its local weather forecast for Mumbai city and the suburbs over the next 48 hours, the IMD stated that skies will remain partly cloudy. The department noted the possibility of occasional light rains during this period, with maximum temperatures forecast to remain around 32°C and minimum temperatures around 25°C.
The ongoing lull follows a severely dry spell last month, during which Mumbai received 66 per cent below normal rainfall for August. The deficient rainfall has been attributed to prevailing El Niño climatic conditions.
Despite the poor monsoon activity in August, the city's broader water situation has remained secure. Owing to heavy downpours during the first two months of the monsoon season, Mumbai had already logged 96 per cent of its average annual rainfall before the dry conditions set in.
Water storage across the city's supply system continues to be healthy. The water levels in the seven reservoirs supplying water to Mumbai are holding at around 95 per cent.
As of Sunday morning, the lakes were at 95.97 per cent of their total storage capacity. The total useful water content across the seven reservoirs stood at 13.89 million litres, against a total storage capacity of 14.47 million litres.
