IMD Forecasts Moderate Rain and Gusty Winds for Mumbai as Air Quality Stays Good

Mumbai woke up to light drizzle, overcast skies, and gusty winds on Sunday morning as active monsoon conditions continued across the city and surrounding areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate rainfall across several locations throughout the day, while confirming that no weather alerts have been issued for Mumbai for the upcoming week.

According to the weather department, Mumbai and its suburbs are expected to experience generally cloudy skies, accompanied by intermittent moderate rain. While widespread heavy rainfall is not anticipated, isolated parts of the city could receive moderate to heavy showers during the day.

The weather agency also noted that the city will experience strong winds, with speeds expected to range between 40 and 50 kmph. During intense spells of rainfall, wind gusts could potentially reach between 50 and 60 kmph. In terms of temperature, the maximum reading is expected to hover around 31°C, following a minimum temperature of 29°C recorded on Sunday morning.

These conditions follow multiple moderate to heavy spells of rain recorded across Mumbai and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region during the opening days of August. Forecasters have indicated that light to moderate rainfall will likely persist across the city through the week as monsoon currents remain active over the region.

Alongside the rainy conditions, the city's air quality remained in the 'Good' category on Sunday morning. Official monitoring data showed Mumbai's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) standing at 31. Under standard environmental classification guidelines, an AQI value between 0 and 50 is categorized as 'Good', whereas 51 to 100 is rated 'Moderate', 101 to 200 is 'Poor', 201 to 300 is 'Unhealthy', and any reading above 300 is considered 'Severe'.

With intermittent showers and strong wind gusts expected throughout the day, authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, particularly while commuting during intense spells of rain. However, with no severe rain alerts in place, the city is anticipated to see manageable monsoon activity over the coming days.
