IMD Forecasts Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds in Mumbai After Two Day Rain Lull

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds to hit Mumbai on Saturday, June 27, 2026, and Sunday, June 28, 2026. The stormy weather is expected to return to the city after a brief 48-hour lull in rainfall, which saw residents braving afternoon heat near the Gateway of India on Friday.
According to the weather department, Mumbai recorded a significant drop in rainfall in the 48 hours between Wednesday and Friday. This brief respite came after heavy to very heavy rainfall lashed across the city earlier in the week, specifically between Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
Following two days of minimal rain, the IMD has warned of a sudden shift in weather patterns over the weekend. The forecast predicts that the upcoming thunderstorms will be accompanied by active lightning strikes and gusty winds across Mumbai on both Saturday and Sunday.
The temporary break in precipitation on Friday had brought warmer conditions to the coastal city. A woman and a girl were observed braving the afternoon heat near the Gateway of India on Friday, just hours before the wet and windy weather was projected to return.
The IMD's updated forecast indicates that the brief lull in rainfall has ended, paving the way for a wet weekend with stormy conditions. Residents across Mumbai are advised to prepare for the return of gusty winds and lightning following the two-day decline in precipitation.
