IMD issues four-day yellow alert for Thane and Mumbai starting June 29

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a yellow alert for Thane and Mumbai, forecasting a four-day spell of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. The alert is in place from June 29 to July 2, with the weather department warning of winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph alongside light to moderate rain at isolated places.
The weather forecast indicates that while light to moderate rain is expected throughout the early part of the week, heavy rainfall is predicted to hit isolated places on July 2. The IMD's yellow alert covers Monday to Wednesday, prompting local authorities to monitor the situation.
Prior to this alert, the region experienced only light rainfall over a 24-hour period, despite earlier forecasts of thunderstorms and moderate rain. Weather data revealed that the Colaba observatory recorded 6.2 mm of rainfall between 8:00 AM on June 27 and 8:00 AM on June 28. During the exact same timeframe, the Santacruz observatory received just 0.8 mm of rain. On Sunday, showers remained scattered across the area, even though the IMD had forecast light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
Despite the rainfall remaining scattered and light, several incidents were reported by civic authorities. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recorded a total of 11 short-circuit incidents across the region.
In addition to the electrical issues, the BMC reported 10 cases of tree or branch falls. There were also three incidents of house or wall collapses. According to municipal reports, no injuries were reported in any of these occurrences.
As the yellow alert remains active through Wednesday, residents in Thane and Mumbai are advised to prepare for potential thunderstorms and light to moderate rain, with the heaviest showers expected at isolated locations on July 2.
