IMD Issues Orange Alert for Thane and Mumbai After Heavy Monsoon Rains Cause Waterlogging

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange alert for Thane and its neighbouring districts, including Mumbai, Raigad, and Palghar, after heavy monsoon rains lashed the region between June 23 and June 24, 2026. The heavy downpour, which marked the arrival of the southwest monsoon after a 13-day delay, caused waterlogging in several areas, including the Everard Nagar subway and near the Saki Naka Metro station.
According to the weather department, the southwest monsoon has advanced into the central Arabian Sea. This advancement has triggered moderate to intense spells of rain across Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and Sindhudurg. The weather system has also caused rainfall in other parts of the country, including Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar.
The region recorded significant rainfall overnight as residents woke up to a heavy downpour on Wednesday morning. Between 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, and 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24, Mumbai recorded a total of 195 mm of rain. Within the city, the eastern suburbs received 167 mm of rainfall, while the western suburbs recorded a higher volume of 208 mm.
The intense wet spell led to multiple civic disruptions and incidents of damage. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a retaining wall near a residential building collapsed in Vikhroli West late on Tuesday night, June 23.
In another weather-related incident reported by authorities, a tree fell onto a car in Dadar during the heavy downpour.
The heavy rainfall on Wednesday morning left commuters navigating waterlogged streets, particularly around key transit points. The Everard Nagar subway and the area surrounding the Saki Naka Metro station were among the primary spots impacted by waterlogging.
The IMD has forecasted that moderate to intense spells of rain will continue for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and Sindhudurg.
