IMD Issues Thunderstorm Alert For Colaba And Mumbai As Lake Levels Remain Low

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday, June 27, 2026, officially issued a thunderstorm alert for Mumbai and its suburbs, forecasting lightning, gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph, and intermittent rainfall over the next 48 hours. The weather advisory from the agency comes as parts of the city, including the Colaba neighborhood, continue to receive intermittent showers on Saturday.

According to the weather forecasting agency, the local Colaba observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 25.3 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Along with this temperature, the Colaba station registered 18.2 mm of rainfall, marking a significant wet spell for the southern locality.

In contrast, the Santacruz observatory, which monitors weather conditions in the suburbs of Mumbai, registered a minimum temperature of 25.9 degrees Celsius. The Santacruz station recorded a far lower rainfall measurement of just 0.5 mm during the same period, showcasing the localized nature of the intermittent rain across different parts of the city.

The recent wet weather has brought immediate relief from the heavy humidity that had been affecting residents across Mumbai and its suburbs. However, the intermittent rainfall has not yet resolved the city's broader water supply concerns.

Despite the active thunderstorm alert and the rainfall recorded at both the Colaba and Santacruz observatories, the water levels in the seven lakes that supply the city remain critically low. According to official figures, the collective water levels in these key reservoirs stand at just 7.53 percent of their total capacity.

The India Meteorological Department's advisory warns that the thunderstorm conditions, complete with lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 40 kmph, are likely to persist across the region. Local residents in Mumbai and its suburbs are advised to remain cautious as the intermittent rain continues to downpour over the next 48 hours, as predicted by the weather forecasting agency.
