IMD Issues Yellow Alert as Heavy Rains Return to Thane and Coastal Districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in Thane and neighbouring districts, including Mumbai, Palghar, and Raigad, for Sunday, July 19, 2026. This followed the return of precipitation on Saturday night, July 18, 2026, which brought much-needed relief to local farmers after a dry spell but also prompted safety advisories and a 24-hour high tide alert along the coast.
Light to moderate showers continued through Sunday morning across the region. In neighbouring Mumbai, areas such as Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, and Vile Parle, along with the central suburbs, recorded rainfall during the night. Weather analysts indicated that the intensity of the rainfall is expected to increase starting Wednesday, July 22, 2026. Additionally, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds were expected in Palghar district.
According to the IMD, the weather was influenced by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. Although the system weakened on Saturday, persisting cyclonic circulations in the atmosphere sustained the rainfall.
The return of the rain followed a pause after heavy downpours in North Konkan and Mumbai during the first week of July, which had caused waterlogging in several locations. The subsequent dry spell had led to a rise in temperatures and delayed agricultural activities. The weekend rainfall provided timely relief to local farmers who were facing agricultural delays.
Alongside the rain, the State Disaster Management Department issued a 24-hour high tide alert for the Maharashtra coast. Fishermen and coastal residents were advised to take strict precautions. Although a low-intensity earthquake in the Arabian Sea did not create any maritime hazard, authorities advised fishermen against venturing into the deep sea and instructed them to properly secure vessels, trawlers, and fishing equipment on the shore.
Residents, tourists, and children were also advised to avoid beaches and rocky areas. The public has been instructed to follow updates from the local fisheries department, coastal administration, and the meteorological department.
Emergency contact numbers have been activated for the public, including the Indian Coast Guard at 1554, the Coastal Security Helpline at 1093, and the State Disaster Management Cell at 1070.
