IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Thane as Rains Boost Regional Lake Levels to 90 Percent

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Thane for Friday, forecasting continued rainfall after moderate to heavy showers swept across the region on Thursday. While Thane remains under the weather alert, the weather bureau has not issued any alerts for neighbouring Mumbai and Palghar for the next three days.

Thursday's intermittent showers provided relief following a brief dry spell earlier in the week, with isolated locations experiencing heavy downpours. Automated weather station data showed that between 8 am and 6 pm, the eastern suburbs recorded an average rainfall of 16.50 mm, the western suburbs logged 13.75 mm, and the island city recorded 11.74 mm.

The ongoing wet spell has positively impacted the seven supply lakes that cater to the metropolitan region. Intermittent precipitation over the past two days pushed the combined usable water stock in these reservoirs to 13.06 lakh million litres, reaching roughly 90 per cent of their total required capacity.

The current storage figures reflect a marginal increase compared to the same period last year, when water levels stood at 12.91 lakh million litres, or 89.21 per cent of capacity. With the latest replenishment, the available water reserves are estimated to last for 319 days.

Despite the steady rise in lake levels and substantial storage, the 10 per cent water cut that was imposed on May 15 continues to remain in force.
