IMD Upgrades Alert to Yellow as Unexpected Rain Hits Colaba and Mumbai

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its weather alert for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region from green to yellow until Wednesday, following unexpected showers across the city on Tuesday, August 11. Commuters in Colaba and other isolated pockets of Mumbai encountered sudden rain during their morning travel, prompting weather officials to revise an earlier 10 a.m. green alert to a yellow alert, indicating heavy rainfall at select spots.

Data from the BMC Disaster Management Department’s rain situation report for August 11 showed varying levels of precipitation across the city. Colaba recorded 14.0 mm of rainfall in the preceding 24 hours, with cumulative rainfall reaching 24.4 mm by 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Elsewhere in the city, Santacruz recorded 20 mm of rain in the 24 hours prior, with rainfall reaching 43.8 mm by 5:30 p.m. Pedestrians were seen navigating the wet weather at major transit locations, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

The yellow alert remains active through Wednesday as civic authorities monitor weather conditions across the metropolitan region.
