Indian Navy to Commission Diving Support Vessel Nipun at Mumbai Naval Dockyard

The Indian Navy is set to commission its second Nistar-Class diving support vessel, Nipun, on August 31 at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. The induction of the specialised vessel marks a key enhancement to the Navy's deep-sea diving and underwater support capabilities as the ship transitions from construction to active operational service.

Nipun was indigenously designed and constructed by Visakhapatnam-based Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL). The vessel was officially delivered to the Indian Navy on July 30 following the completion of an extensive programme of outfitting and sea trials, representing a milestone in domestic defence shipbuilding.

According to the Indian Navy, the purpose-built platform is engineered to support a broad spectrum of diving and underwater operations. It is equipped with advanced diving systems and underwater intervention capabilities designed to provide sustained support to naval divers working in demanding sea conditions. The vessel will also augment the Navy's capacity to assist and support submarine rescue operations.

The ship integrates modern systems for platform management, navigation, and precise station keeping. It also houses specialised facilities dedicated to complex underwater intervention, diving operations, and onboard medical support, functioning as a fully integrated platform for sub-surface missions across India's maritime areas of interest.

The design of Nipun's official crest reflects its operational mandate. The crest features a whale, chosen to symbolise endurance, longevity, and prolonged deep-water missions in challenging oceanic environments. It also incorporates a modern diving helmet, representing the diver at the centre of the ship's mission alongside the platform's advanced life-support capabilities.
