JCB Operator Booked in Vidyavihar After Falling Metal Hits College Student

The Tilak Nagar police have registered a case against a 25-year-old JCB operator after an iron C-channel dislodged during a civic demolition drive and struck a 17-year-old college student on Station Road in Vidyavihar (East).

The incident took place at around 3.20 pm on August 25 during a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) road-widening and eviction drive. The injured teenager, Deven Jain, a first-year B.Com student at S.K. Somaiya College, was walking home along Station Road accompanied by his 17-year-old cousin, Pratham Jain.

According to police reports, demolition activity was underway near Chamunda Jewellers, located beside Tip Top Lodge, when the accident occurred. While a JCB was being used to tear down a shop structure, an iron C-channel suddenly became dislodged from the building and flew outward toward the street, striking Deven above his right eye.

Local residents rushed to help and transported the teenager to Rajawadi Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Deven's father, Vinod Bhimrao Jain, a 42-year-old scrap dealer residing in Bhandup West, reached the hospital after receiving information about his son's injuries.

Based on a complaint filed by the father, police booked the machine operator, identified as Mehtab Mehdi Hasan, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for alleged negligence causing serious injuries. The JCB machine involved in the demolition drive was identified with registration number MH-03-ER-7021.

Tilak Nagar police visited the spot to examine the scene following the incident. A preliminary inquiry indicated that the civic demolition work was being carried out without adequate safety measures or protective barricading to shield pedestrians from falling debris.

Deven remains under treatment at Rajawadi Hospital while the police proceed with their investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
