A 52-year-old scooter rider from Juhugaon in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, was killed after a crane allegedly rammed into his two-wheeler on Veer Jijamata Bhosale Marg at MHADA PMGP in Mankhurd on the morning of August 18.
The deceased has been identified as Suresh Narayan Shetty. Following the incident, the Mankhurd police registered a First Information Report against the crane driver, identified as 36-year-old Sajid Ansari, for allegedly operating the vehicle at high speed, recklessly, and in violation of traffic regulations.
According to the police, the incident came to light when Constable Pravin Abasaheb Mane, 35, was on patrolling duty with a colleague on Beat Marshal 2. At around 11:15 am, while monitoring Beat No. 2, the personnel noticed a significant traffic disruption near Mayur Society, Building No. 101, situated along Veer Jijamata Bhosale Marg.
Upon arriving at the location to inspect the cause of the congestion, Constable Mane observed that an ACE company crane, bearing registration number MH 43 CM 7638, had collided with an Activa scooter, bearing registration number MH 43 AK 9962. Shetty was discovered lying unconscious on the road near the front left wheel of the heavy vehicle. He had suffered critical injuries to his chest and right hand as a result of the collision.
Constable Mane, along with local residents identified as Tohsif Khan, Sameer Shaikh, and Sufiyan Khan, quickly arranged to transport the injured rider to Shatabdi Hospital. Shetty was moved in an autorickshaw driven by Rais Shaikh. Following the rescue effort, the damaged scooter and the crane were moved to the roadside to restore vehicular movement in the area.
Doctors at Shatabdi Hospital declared Shetty dead before he could be admitted for treatment. Police subsequently detained Ansari, a resident of Jarimari in Kurla West, and took him into custody at the police station for questioning.
The Mankhurd police registered the case on the basis of a complaint submitted by Constable Mane. The charges have been filed under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act. Police officials confirmed that further investigation into the crash is underway.
