Kapil Sibal Criticises Denial of Bail to Former TISS Students in Mumbai

Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Kapil Sibal on Monday criticized the denial of anticipatory bail to two former Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) students in Mumbai, calling the decision a "shame" and questioning the government, police, and judiciary.

A court in Mumbai on August 7 had denied anticipatory bail to the two former TISS students, who are facing criminal charges over an event held on the university campus.

The former students face criminal cases for allegedly holding an unauthorized campus gathering to pay homage to former Delhi University Professor GN Saibaba. The cases also allege that slogans were raised during the event seeking the release of undertrial prisoners Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam.

Sibal claimed that the court's decision to refuse bail reflected the government's intolerance as well as the current state of the judiciary.
