Kasarvadavali Road Closed From July 6 For Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel Work

The Thane Traffic Police has announced a month-long road closure and traffic diversion in the Kasarvadavali area of Thane to facilitate construction work for the Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel project. The existing road connecting Hillcrest Society at Mulla Baug to Nilkanth Green will be closed to all vehicular traffic from 12:01 AM on July 6 until midnight on August 5.

According to the traffic control notification issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Pankaj Shirsat, the diversion is necessary as contractor Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. (MEIL) undertakes road realignment and construction of a road ramp. The work is being carried out for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

During the closure, motorists travelling on the route will be diverted via Nilkanth Woods and Satya Shankar Society. Commuters will then rejoin the Mulla Baug road through a barricaded diversion. Police stated that these measures have been introduced to ensure smooth traffic flow and prevent congestion in the area while the road is shifted to a newly constructed alignment.

The order has been issued under Sections 115 and 116 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which empowers the traffic police to regulate vehicular movement for public safety. Emergency and essential service vehicles are exempted from these restrictions. This exemption applies to police vehicles, ambulances, fire brigade vehicles, green corridor movements, and oxygen transport vehicles.

The Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel is a flagship infrastructure project designed to connect Ghodbunder Road in Thane directly to the Western Express Highway in Borivali. The 11.84-kilometre corridor will feature 10.25 kilometres of twin tunnels and 1.59 kilometres of approach roads. Once completed, the project is expected to reduce travel times between Thane and Borivali from 60 to 90 minutes down to about 15 minutes, while easing congestion on Ghodbunder Road.

Traffic police have advised commuters using the Kasarvadavali-Mulla Baug stretch to plan their journeys in advance and use the designated diversion routes to avoid delays.
