KDMC health centre wall collapses and destroys Kalyan East housing society office

KDMC health centre wall collapses and destroys Kalyan East housing society office

A retaining wall of a health centre operated by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) collapsed in Kalyan East around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, completely crushing the office of an adjacent housing society. The incident, which occurred within the premises of the KDMC's 'D' Ward Office, triggered panic among local residents but resulted in no injuries as the office was unoccupied at the time.

The collapse completely destroyed the office of the New Durgesh Co-operative Housing Society, reducing the structure to rubble and causing significant property damage. According to local residents, the retaining wall had weakened due to continuous heavy rainfall. Residents also alleged that the wall had been constructed without proper authorisation before it gave way.

Following the collapse, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) Contact Chief and corporator Mahesh Gaikwad visited the site to inspect the damage. Gaikwad strongly criticised KDMC officials for their alleged negligence, stating that the civic administration could not evade responsibility for the incident. He questioned the KDMC's failure to ensure the structural safety of its municipal infrastructure.

Gaikwad drew comparisons to a previous tragedy in Chiknipada last year, where a roof collapse claimed five lives. He argued that the civic body had failed to learn from past incidents and had neglected to take adequate preventive measures. Gaikwad warned that the KDMC would be held responsible for any future accidents resulting from such negligence.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner Umesh Yamgar, who is in charge of the 'D' Ward, also arrived at the scene to inspect the debris. Yamgar assured the affected residents that appropriate action would be taken in response to the incident.

Meanwhile, residents of the New Durgesh Co-operative Housing Society have demanded full compensation for the destruction of their office. They have also urged the civic administration to immediately conduct structural audits of all dilapidated and potentially dangerous buildings and retaining walls across the city.
