Khandala Ghat Slope Failure Disrupts Mumbai-Pune Rail Services

Khandala Ghat Slope Failure Disrupts Mumbai-Pune Rail Services

Central Railway has launched urgent restoration work in the Khandala Ghat section of the Mumbai-Pune rail route following major rail disruptions. The service interruptions were caused by a slope protection failure on the third line of the route during the monsoon season of 2026.

The incident, reported on July 9, 2026, has led to the interruption of rail services on the vital Mumbai-Pune route. The third line along the Khandala Ghats had previously survived the monsoon seasons of 2024 and 2025 without experiencing similar failures.

Central Railway had earlier highlighted the uninterrupted operation of this middle line ghat section during the previous two monsoons of 2024 and 2025. The railway authority had pointed to this survival as clear evidence that its extensive slope stabilisation and protection works had been highly effective in preventing landslides and disruptions.

However, the slope protection measures failed during the 2026 monsoon season. When asked what had changed this year to cause the failure, Central Railway officials pointed directly to the extraordinary rainfall received over a short period. This intense and heavy downpour tested the existing slope protection installations beyond their limits, leading to the collapse.

Active restoration work is currently in progress at the mishap site along the Mumbai-Pune route. Central Railway teams are working on the affected section to repair the damaged slope and restore the third line for regular operations.

The disruption on the third line, which serves as a critical link for trains traversing the ghats, has necessitated a large-scale response from railway engineers. The ongoing restoration work is focused on clearing the affected tracks and reinforcing the slope to prevent further failures in the Khandala Ghat section.
