Kurla West Landslide Kills 6, Injures 4 at Gaushiya Chawl
At least six people were killed and four others injured after a landslide struck Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, near Rathod Medical in Kurla West, around 3:48 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. Soil and debris from a hillside collapsed onto two to three houses in the eastern suburb, trapping residents and causing severe property damage.
Rescue operations were launched immediately following the collapse, which the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) classified as a level-II incident. Deputy Chief Fire Brigade Officer K.R. Yadav confirmed that two people remained trapped under the debris as emergency teams worked to reach them.
A multi-agency team comprising the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 50 BMC personnel, the Mumbai Fire Brigade, and Mumbai Police joined the operation. Emergency equipment deployed to the scene included four fire engines, two fire tenders, two rescue vehicles, two mobile water tankers, and one quick response water vehicle, overseen by senior fire officials.
Rescue teams faced physical challenges accessing the disaster site. Mayor Ritu Tawde, who visited the location to inspect relief operations, stated that the route leading to the site was extremely narrow, allowing only one person to pass through at a time.
Among the victims were four members of a single family, including two children, one female, and one male, who were taken to Rathod Medical. Two others, identified as 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari and 18-year-old Sohel Ansari, were taken to Rajawadi Hospital. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Vishal declared Mohamad brought dead, while Sohel was treated for head injuries.
Mayor Tawde met with affected families to offer condolences and instructed all responding agencies to expedite search and rescue work. She announced financial assistance of ₹4 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased victim and ₹50,000 for each injured person.
Several municipal representatives attended the site alongside the mayor, including Ward Committee Chairman Vijayendra Shinde, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr. Avinash Dhakane, and Assistant Commissioner (In-charge) for L Ward Anil Jadhav.
