Land acquisition begins for 28 km Kalyan Murbad railway line

The Maharashtra State Government has officially commenced the land acquisition process for the proposed 28-kilometre Kalyan–Murbad railway project, issuing a notification to acquire 151.44 hectares of land in the first phase. The railway corridor will connect Kalyan to Murbad via Ambivli and Titwala, directly passing through local areas such as Mohane and Atali. Affected landowners have been given a 30-day window to submit objections, suggestions, or claims to the competent authority.

This first phase of acquisition covers 151.44 hectares of the total 214 hectares required for the entire project. The acquisition spans 18 villages across Kalyan and Murbad talukas. In Kalyan taluka, 71.86 hectares will be acquired across 10 villages, namely Mohane, Atali, Ambivli, Balyani, Mohili, Revati, Navgaon, Kolimb, Kelani, and Mamnoli. In Murbad taluka, 79.57 hectares will be acquired across eight villages, including Potgaon, Ghorale, Nandani, Pashani, Devpe, Shastrinagar, Malinagar, and Murbad town.

First announced in 2016 by the then Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, the project is a joint venture between the Central Government of India and the Maharashtra State Government. After securing the necessary administrative approvals, technical clearances, and funding, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently announced budgetary support to initiate the physical phase of the project.

The new railway line will provide Murbad taluka with its first-ever direct railway connection. Currently, local commuters must travel to stations in Kalyan, Shahad, Badlapur, or Titwala to access the rail network. Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel times and commuting costs for local residents, including students, office-goers, traders, and farmers.

The competent authority will hear all objections raised by landowners during the 30-day period. Compensation details will be finalized only after the disposal of these objections and the completion of the formal statutory process.
