Landslide Hits Khadi No 3 in Kurla, Marking Third Collapse in 20 Years

A landslide struck Khadi No. 3 in Kurla on Wednesday, marking the third time in two decades that the hillside neighbourhood has experienced such a collapse. The incident was officially classified as a landslide by the Disaster Management Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The recent collapse has heightened fears among local residents, many of whom live in structures located just inches away from the hillside. The latest event has brought back memories of earlier hillside failures in the locality, leaving the community deeply concerned about ongoing vulnerability.

Locals recall the first landslide on July 12, 2005, as the most devastating of the three. That disaster occurred in the afternoon following continuous rainfall, when residents were inside their homes due to the weather. An elderly resident recalled helping first responders pull people out from the collapse in 2005.

A second, smaller landslide occurred in Khadi No. 3 in 2010. While no lives were lost during the 2010 incident, the occurrence of a third landslide on Wednesday came as a surprise to locals, reinforcing long-standing fears over the safety of the hillside.
