Leopard Kills Stray Dog Inside IIT-Bombay Campus in Powai

A leopard entered the IIT-Bombay campus in Powai and killed a stray dog in the staff hostel area during the early hours of June 19th. The incident, which occurred at approximately 2:00 am, was captured on a campus CCTV camera. The event has sparked significant fear and raised safety concerns among campus residents, students, and staff members regarding leopard activity near residential zones, particularly at night.
The CCTV footage of the attack has since drawn widespread attention and renewed ongoing concerns about wild leopard activity close to the residential quarters of the campus.
In the recorded footage, an Indian stray dog is seen standing near a staircase in the staff hostel area of the campus. The dog appears uneasy in the moments leading up to the attack, repeatedly looking toward its right as if sensing danger nearby.
Shortly after, a leopard quietly enters the camera frame and walks directly toward the animal. The leopard then suddenly attacks the dog. A brief struggle follows as the dog attempts to defend itself from the predator.
However, the struggle lasts only a few seconds. The leopard quickly overpowers the dog by grabbing it by the neck. The dog was killed in the attack, after which the leopard dragged the carcass away and disappeared into the darkness.
The incident has created an atmosphere of fear among students, staff members, and local residents who live on the university campus. Many community members have expressed worry about the safety of both people and pets living on the campus, especially during the night hours.
While leopard sightings have been reported in and around the Powai area in the past due to its close proximity to forested regions, residents stated that seeing these wild animals and such incidents occur so close to their living quarters is deeply disturbing.
