Maharashtra Assembly Adjourned After Clash Over Rain Havoc and Mangroves

The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in Mumbai was temporarily adjourned on Wednesday following a stormy war of words over the havoc caused by recent heavy rains, environmental degradation, and whether the disaster could be classified as an "act of God."
The heated exchange took place between Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar and Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray, alongside other members of the opposition and treasury benches. The confrontation led to sloganeering from both sides, forcing a brief five-minute adjournment of the House.
The dispute began when opposition members protested the delay in launching a discussion on the ongoing monsoon situation, which they described as the most urgent issue currently before the House. In response, Speaker Narwekar announced that a short-duration discussion on the monsoon situation was scheduled to be held on Thursday.
While addressing the widespread damage across the state, Narwekar remarked that climate change was the driving force behind the extreme weather. He argued that such natural events could not be controlled.
Aaditya Thackeray countered the Speaker's comments by questioning whether the scheduled discussion would cover human activities that damage the environment. He specifically asked if there would be a discussion on the cutting of mangroves and forests.
"Will you say this was an act of God?" Thackeray asked, suggesting that environmental degradation had severely worsened the impact of the heavy rains.
Speaker Narwekar responded to the query by asking Thackeray whether he could control an "act of God."
The debate escalated further when the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader raised the issue of alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya. This statement triggered sharp reactions and heated exchanges between the opposition and treasury benches, culminating in the five-minute adjournment.
The legislative clash occurred as Maharashtra continues to grapple with the effects of heavy rainfall over the past few days. Mumbai and several other parts of the state have reported extensive waterlogging, tree falls, fatalities, and major disruptions to road, rail, and air transport services.
