Maharashtra ATS Uncovers Inter-State Network Probing Minor Radicalisation Plot
The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has uncovered an alleged inter-state network linking a fundamentalist organisation in the state with individuals associated with the Hyderabad-based Darsgah-Jihad-O-Shahadat (DJS), officials said on August 13. Investigators are probing an alleged attempt to radicalise minors and build a covert "child wing," tracing operational, financial, and logistical links across Ahilyanagar and the Yavatmal region, including Pusad, Pardi, and Umarkhed.
The development follows an ATS crackdown on the fundamentalist organisation for allegedly running a structured programme to indoctrinate children through training camps and ideological sessions. Investigators are currently examining communication records, travel details, financial transactions, and other evidence gathered from across the state.
According to ATS officials, some Maharashtra-based suspects maintained discreet contact with DJS-associated individuals and allegedly participated in programmes conducted under DJS community outreach activities. Investigators are examining whether these contacts were isolated interactions or formed part of a wider inter-state network.
Founded in Hyderabad in 1983, DJS describes itself as a socio-religious organisation involved in community outreach as well as martial arts and self-defence training. The organisation has consistently denied any involvement in unlawful or extremist activities. However, it has previously faced scrutiny from security agencies over allegations regarding radicalisation and the ties of some former associates with radical groups.
According to security dossiers, historical ties between regional elements and DJS date back to the ban on the Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) in September 2001, when Sambhajinagar emerged as a primary location where contacts were established until around 2006. Following arms recoveries and arrests in Sambhajinagar and elsewhere, DJS had distanced itself from such associates to avoid anti-terror scrutiny.
Officials suspect that elements linked to DJS and SIMI frontal entities may once again be attempting to influence young minds and draw them towards extremist ideology. The investigation remains ongoing.
