Maharashtra Autorickshaw Unions Submit 7 Demands to Transport Minister

Autorickshaw driver unions across Maharashtra submitted a seven-point list of demands to State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik in Mumbai on September 4, 2026, calling for urgent government action to address an earnings crisis and curb illegal transport services.

The representation was formally submitted by the Autorickshaw Chalak-Malak Sanghatana Sanyukta Kruti Samiti Maharashtra, known as the Autorickshaw Driver-Owner Association Joint Action Committee. According to an official statement from the committee, the unions urged the state administration to enforce stricter transport rules to protect the daily livelihoods of autorickshaw operators.

Among their key demands is a crackdown on illegal bike taxis and unauthorised vehicles operating across the state. The joint action committee noted that these unlicensed operations have severely impacted the income of legitimate autorickshaw drivers.

Additionally, the unions called for making permits mandatory for electric autorickshaws. The committee urged the transport ministry to implement these regulatory measures promptly to protect registered operators against unchecked competition and restore stability to the sector.
