Maharashtra Cancels Mandatory Hindi Exam for State Government Employees

The Maharashtra government has officially cancelled the Hindi language examination previously required for state government employees, applying the decision retrospectively from May 7.

The Marathi Language Department issued a Government Resolution on Monday, August 31, formally putting an end to the exam conducted by the Directorate of Languages. The resolution noted that the test, which was originally introduced before the formation of Maharashtra, is no longer justified under the state's present administrative framework.

According to the state administration, the cancellation comes in view of the official use of Marathi across state departments and the declining relevance of Hindi within day-to-day government operations.

With the issuance of the Government Resolution, state employees will no longer be required to clear the Hindi language test conducted by the Directorate of Languages, formalising a policy change that takes effect from May 7.
