Maharashtra Council Adjourned as Rains Kill 13 in Mumbai, Palghar, and Raigad

The Maharashtra Legislative Council was adjourned for the day on Monday, July 6, 2026, in view of the heavy rainfall that has severely impacted Mumbai and its neighbouring areas. The intense downpour has resulted in 13 rain-related deaths over the past three to four days, including a devastating chawl collapse in Mumbai's Mankhurd locality.
Before the Upper House of the legislature was officially adjourned, Maharashtra's Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan addressed the members to provide an official update on the situation. Minister Mahajan stated that Mumbai, along with the neighbouring districts of Palghar and Raigad, has witnessed record-breaking rainfall over the last few days.
According to the statement made by the Disaster Management Minister, the severe weather conditions have claimed 13 lives in various rain-related accidents and incidents in the region over the preceding three to four days.
One of the deadliest incidents occurred on Sunday, July 5, 2026, in the Mankhurd area of Mumbai. Following the heavy rains, a chawl in the locality collapsed, leading to the deaths of six individuals.
In addition to the building collapse, tree falls have also proven fatal in Mumbai. Over the two days prior to the council's adjournment, two persons died in tree collapse incidents in the city. These fatalities follow an earlier incident on June 30, 2026, in which an 11-year-old boy lost his life after an uprooted tree fell onto a moving school bus.
With the region already experiencing severe impacts, the Meteorological (MeT) office has officially issued a 'red' alert. Minister Mahajan informed the legislative council that the MeT office has forecast heavy rains to continue over the next two days across the affected districts, including Mumbai, Palghar, and Raigad.
