Maharashtra Government Assures Assembly Haffkine Institute Will Not Be Privatised

The Maharashtra state government assured the Legislative Assembly in Mumbai on Friday, July 3, 2026, that the Haffkine Institute will not be privatised. The official assurance was delivered during a legislative session following concerns raised by the opposition regarding the future of the public institution.
Congress legislature party leader Vijay Wadettiwar initiated the discussion in the Assembly. He raised urgent concerns over the future of the Haffkine Institute and sought a clear, unambiguous assurance from the state government that the institution would remain under public ownership and would not be handed over to private entities.
During the discussion, Wadettiwar questioned the government regarding reports that suggested possible privatisation plans for the institute. He expressed concern over these reports and demanded complete transparency from the state administration concerning any decisions regarding the institute’s assets and its future development plans.
In response to the queries raised by the Congress leader, the state government clarified its stance, assuring the Assembly that there are no plans to privatise the Haffkine Institute. This assurance ensures that the Haffkine Institute will continue to operate as a public entity.
Furthermore, the government's commitment aims to bring complete transparency to all future decisions regarding the institute's assets and development plans. The discussion in the Assembly highlighted the importance of safeguarding public institutions and ensuring that their assets are managed with public accountability.
By addressing Wadettiwar's questions directly, the state government has provided clarity on the administrative path forward for the Haffkine Institute, reassuring both the legislature and the public about the institution's status.
