Maharashtra Halts MMC Registration for Homoeopaths Pending Court Ruling

The Maharashtra medical education department has directed the Maharashtra Medical Council administrator to suspend the registration of homoeopaths until a final court order is delivered, following demonstrations held at Azad Maidan in Mumbai.

The state government's decision came in the aftermath of strikes by the Indian Medical Association and the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors, which had impacted healthcare services.

In an official communication addressed to the MMC, the government noted that it would be appropriate to issue registration certificates only after the situation is resolved, pending either the finalisation of a standard operating procedure or a final verdict from the court.

The directive was issued on the same day that homoeopathic associations staged a mass protest demanding the resumption of MMC registrations. Protesters also marched to the MMC premises.

Despite police deployments at the MMC office, protesters managed to enter the cabin of the registrar. Videos circulated by AYUSH associations showed members shouting at MMC registrar Dr Rakesh Waghmare and demanding the immediate issuance of registration certificates.

MMC administrator Dr Vinky Rughwani condemned the conduct of the demonstrators, stating that the manner in which they entered the council offices was unacceptable.
