Maharashtra launches Marathi language campaign for non-Marathi auto and taxi drivers

MUMBAI — On July 3, 2026, the Maharashtra government officially launched a statewide language proficiency campaign in Mumbai and across the state to help non-Marathi autorickshaw and taxi drivers communicate better with passengers.

The special initiative is designed to promote respectful and effective communication in the Marathi language between public transport drivers and commuters. According to officials, the campaign has been jointly organised by the State Transport Department and several Marathi literary organisations.

The campaign targets non-Marathi speaking drivers who operate taxis and autorickshaws, which are essential to daily transit. By teaching key language skills, the program aims to foster polite and clear interactions, helping drivers understand passenger instructions and converse respectfully.

As reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI), the joint effort between the State Transport Department and the literary groups seeks to bridge communication gaps in the public transport sector. The initiative highlights the state's focus on improving the daily commuting experience through better language integration.
