Maharashtra Launches Scientific Action Plan to Curb Human-Elephant Conflict

On July 10, 2026, the Maharashtra State Forest Department launched a comprehensive scientific action plan to curb rising human-elephant conflict across the forest circles of Kolhapur, Chandrapur, Nagpur, and Gadchiroli. Directed by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) M Srinivasa Reddy, the initiative aims to protect vulnerable village communities and agricultural lands from damage while enhancing the overall safety of both humans and elephants.
The rollout of this scientific plan follows a notable rise in incidents where elephants have entered local villages and farms, causing significant damage and presenting safety risks to residents. In response, the forest department is shifting towards a highly coordinated and scientific approach to manage the interactions between elephants and local populations in these areas.
Under the newly directed measures, the forest circles of Kolhapur, Chandrapur, Nagpur, and Gadchiroli will implement several key strategies on a priority basis. These include the deployment of dedicated Elephant Task Forces and the fitting of GPS radio collars on conflict-prone elephant herds.
Additionally, the plan introduces real-time village alert systems to warn residents of elephant movements, alongside the establishment of specialised elephant camps. Scientific monitoring will be utilized throughout the process to ensure the measures are executed effectively across the state's forest divisions.
According to the department, these combined efforts are designed to significantly strengthen emergency preparedness in the affected regions. By tracking herds and warning communities in real time, the forest department hopes to reduce the frequency of conflicts and secure the safety of both local farmers and the elephant population.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests M Srinivasa Reddy has instructed the forest officials in Kolhapur, Chandrapur, Nagpur, and Gadchiroli to treat these measures as a top priority. This comprehensive action plan represents a major transition to a scientific and coordinated effort to resolve ongoing issues between human communities and elephant herds in Maharashtra.
