Maharashtra Launches Vehicle HSRP Crackdown as Rain Disrupts First Day of Inspections

The Maharashtra Transport Department on Wednesday launched a statewide enforcement campaign against vehicles operating without High Security Registration Plates (HSRP). However, heavy rainfall across Maharashtra disrupted the initial day of the drive, hampering field inspections and delaying the submission of data from various Regional Transport Offices (RTOs).
According to initial figures released by the transport department, motor vehicle inspectors checked a total of 158 vehicles on the first day of the campaign. Out of those inspected, 54 vehicles were found to be operating without the mandatory HSRP. No fines had been recovered from the violators at the time the initial data was compiled.
The department noted that the first-day figures do not reflect the actual scale of the statewide drive. Nearly 80 percent of the enforcement teams had not uploaded their inspection data by the end of Wednesday. Only five to seven RTOs across Maharashtra managed to submit their reports on day one.
Transport department sources explained that continuous rainfall disrupted physical field inspections and delayed the submission of daily enforcement sheets from several districts. Officials expect the reporting numbers to rise as weather conditions improve and pending data is compiled.
The enforcement campaign follows the government's decision to crack down on vehicle owners who have failed to transition to HSRP despite multiple past deadlines. The high-security plates are designed to enhance vehicle security, prevent the tampering of license plates, and assist law enforcement agencies in identifying vehicles more efficiently.
State officials confirmed that the crackdown will continue across Maharashtra in the coming days. The number of inspections and penalty cases is projected to increase as full reporting from all RTOs becomes available. The transport department has advised vehicle owners who have not yet installed HSRP to complete the installation process immediately to avoid penalties during the ongoing drive.
