Maharashtra leaders react to Jantar Mantar protest clash and alleged lathi charge
A violent clash and subsequent police lathi-charge during a protest march at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Monday has sparked strong reactions from Maharashtra political leaders. The clash broke out between security forces, including Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, and protesters participating in a CJP-led 'Chalo Sansad' march.
The demonstration, which included students, civil society members, and citizens, was organized to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over examination paper leaks. The clash initiated a wider public debate regarding the boundaries of democratic protest and law enforcement actions.
During the incident, several viral videos on social media showed RPF and police officials allegedly thrashing protesters. Conversely, other viral videos depicted stone-pelting and violence originating from the protesters' side. The clash left several protesters injured, with some seen in a bloodied state, and a few students were subsequently hospitalised.
On Tuesday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the incident, stating that deliberate unrest will not be tolerated. Speaking to reporters, Fadnavis said, “Peaceful protests are a democratic right, but violence and deliberate unrest won't be tolerated; some elements exploit protests for selfish gains; no government wants to baton-charge citizens."
The police response drew heavy condemnation from opposition leaders in Maharashtra. NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule expressed her concern on social media, writing that every citizen has a constitutional right to peacefully voice concerns. Sule stated that the reported use of force to suppress these voices was deeply unfortunate and unacceptable.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray also condemned the police action, characterizing the administration's response as reflective of a cowardly regime. Thackeray criticized the use of brutal force against students and those standing for students who were asking for justice regarding examination paper leaks.
