Maharashtra Mandates Structural Checks for Old Buildings Seeking Water Connections

The Urban Development Department of Maharashtra issued a Government Resolution on Monday making structural stability certificates and construction permits mandatory for old buildings seeking new water, drainage, and other utility connections across the state.

The directive applies to older structures located in all municipal corporations, municipalities, and nagar panchayats in Maharashtra. Compliance with these structural and environmental conditions is now a mandatory prerequisite for civic authorities to grant utility connections.

Under the new government order, property owners must also include provisions for rainwater harvesting and bio-sludge management systems when applying for utility services.

Applicants are required to submit a feasibility report along with their request. This report must establish whether sufficient space is available within the building premises to install facilities for rainwater harvesting as well as solid waste and bio-sludge management.

By tying utility permissions to environmental and structural compliance, the directive ensures older buildings implement waste management and safety measures across all civic jurisdictions in the state.
