Maharashtra Maritime Board Clears Tendering for Mumbai Water Metro
The Maharashtra Maritime Board has cleared key administrative steps to push forward the tendering process for the Mumbai Water Metro, alongside approving public amenity works at Bandra Bandstand and infrastructure repairs across the region.
The decisions were finalized during a board meeting chaired by Maharashtra Fisheries and Ports Minister and Maharashtra Maritime Board Chairperson Nitesh Rane. The board directed officials to execute the tendering process for the Mumbai Water Metro in a transparent, rule-compliant, and competitive manner.
The Water Metro project is designed to offer an alternative water-based transit system for Mumbai and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region, aiming to divert a portion of commuter traffic onto waterways. Officials noted that the approval serves as an administrative directive for tendering, with project timelines depending on the competitive bidding process and subsequent execution phases.
In suburban Bandra, the board sanctioned maintenance and repair work for Bandra Bandstand. The approved works include developing a garden, installing benches, setting up an amphitheatre, and adding other public amenities, with provisions to outsource facility management.
In South Mumbai, the board approved the issuance of a work order for the Radio Club project, directing contractors to adhere strictly to prescribed quality benchmarks and completion schedules.
Beyond the city limits, the board approved repair and strengthening works for the passenger jetty at Mandwa in Raigad district. The jetty upgrade is aimed at enhancing commuter safety and handling growing passenger footfall between Mumbai, Mandwa, and the Alibaug tourism belt.
Further along the coast in Raigad, the board approved a greenfield shipbuilding cluster at Dighi, with tender submissions scheduled by August 20. The cluster is intended to establish shared infrastructure, attract industrial investment in shipbuilding, and generate local employment. Land acquisition and an approach road were also approved for the Goa Shipyard project at Satkondi in Ratnagiri.
During the meeting, Rane instructed officials to devise a structured plan to maximize revenue from land and properties owned by the maritime board. This includes leasing out stalls and permitting commercial stalls on board-owned land through transparent allotment procedures, while expediting pending administrative clearances and tenders.
