Maharashtra Minister Ashish Shelar Elected President of E Sports Games Federation
Maharashtra Minister of Electronics, IT, AI and Cultural Affairs Adv. Ashish Shelar has been elected as the president of the E Sports Games Federation (ESGF). The decision was taken unanimously by board members and state representatives during an ESGF Board Meeting held in New Delhi on Friday.
Shelar, a sports administrator who currently serves as a board member of the Asian Cricket Council and formerly held office at the Mumbai Cricket Association and the Board of Control for Cricket in India, will head the national body established to promote and develop esports and mind sports.
His nomination was proposed by ESGF founder and acting president Adv. Nandan Jha alongside chairperson Ashok Dhyanchand, and seconded by ESGF secretary general Gursharan Singh.
Following his election, Shelar said the role provides an opportunity to give direction to esports growth across the country, noting that around 600 million people in India are engaged with the sector. He announced that the Indian esports team will travel to Japan in September to participate in the Asian Games, emphasizing plans to enhance platforms, training, competitions, and opportunities for domestic talent.
ESGF founder Nandan Jha, chairperson Ashok Dhyanchand, and secretary general Gursharan Singh congratulated Shelar, stating that the federation aims to build a competitive esports ecosystem and expand national-level competitions for grassroots players.
The ESGF is a member of the Global Esports Federation and the International Esports Federation, and is recognised by the Paralympic Committee of India.
