Maharashtra Outlines Plan To Turn Sindhudurg Into World Class Tourism Hub
On July 20, 2026, the Maharashtra government initiated a comprehensive plan to transform Sindhudurg district in the coastal Konkan region into a world-class travel hub. Under the state's flagship 'One State, One Destination' initiative, senior bureaucrats, regional planning officers, and tourism stakeholders convened a strategic planning session at the District Collector’s office in Sindhudurg to establish an integrated tourism roadmap.
The new roadmap focuses on expanding core infrastructure and amenities while providing direct benefits to the local community. Rather than fragmented growth, the state is pushing for a unified development model to upgrade regional infrastructure. This includes plans to substantially improve last-mile transportation, modern sanitation facilities, and tourist information centres across high-footfall zones.
Additionally, the state aims to craft dedicated travel circuits connecting the region's pristine beaches, heritage forts, and biodiversity hotspots. The initiative will also establish a distinctive brand identity for local Malvani cuisine and handicrafts, supported by targeted digital campaigns to improve visitor engagement.
According to officials, the initiative places a heavy focus on long-term sustainability and livelihood creation. Tourism Director Mangesh Joshi highlighted that the coordinated planning and community participation are designed to create quality tourism experiences that generate greater employment for local homestays, artisans, and guides.
District Collector Trupti Dhodmise noted that realizing the district's potential will require close coordination among all concerned departments. She stated that Sindhudurg brings together a rare mix of beaches, historic forts, rich biodiversity, rural tourism, and vibrant local culture.
The planning meeting saw participation from key administrative figures, including the Resident Deputy Collector, Deputy Collectors, and the Deputy Director of Tourism for the Konkan region. Following this initial consultation phase, all participating departments have been directed to submit targeted action proposals. These inputs will be integrated into a master action plan to drive phased execution across the district over the coming months.
